Power BI Connector for Dynamics 365

Build 21.0.8137

Creating the Data Source Name

This section describes how to edit the DSN configuration and then authenticate and connect to Dynamics 365 APIs.

Editing the DSN Configuration

You can use the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to edit the DSN configuration. Note that the DSN is created during the installation process, as described in Installing the Connector.

Complete the following steps to edit the DSN configuration:

  1. Select Start > Search, and enter ODBC Data Sources in the Search box.
  2. Choose the version of the ODBC Administrator that corresponds to the bitness of your Power BI Desktop installation (32-bit or 64-bit).
  3. Click the System DSN tab.
  4. Select the system data source and click Configure.
  5. Edit the information on the Connection tab and click OK.

Connecting to Dynamics 365

For connection, Edition and OrganizationUrl are required connection properties. The Dynamics 365 driver supports connecting to the following Dynamics 365 editions: CustomerService, FieldService, FinOpsOnline, FinOpsOnPremise, HumanResources, Marketing, ProjectOperations and Sales.

Note that "Supply Chain Management" is the same as "Finance and Operations." You can can connect to it by setting the Edition to either "FinOpsOnline" or "FinOpsOnPremise."

For Dynamics 365 Business Central, use the separate Dynamics 365 Business Central driver.

OrganizationUrl is the URL to your Dynamics 365 organization. For instance, https://orgcb42e1d0.crm.dynamics.com

Authenticating using Azure AD

Azure AD is a connection type that goes through OAuth. Set your AuthScheme to AzureAD and see Using OAuth Authentication for an authentication guide.

Authenticating using Azure Service Principal

Azure Service Principal is a connection type that goes through OAuth. Set your AuthScheme to AzureServicePrincipal and see Using Azure Service Principal Authentication for an authentication guide.

Authenticating using MSI Authentication

If you are running Dynamics 365 on an Azure VM, you can leverage Managed Service Identity (MSI) credentials to connect:

  • AuthScheme: Set this to AzureMSI.

The MSI credentials will then be automatically obtained for authentication.

Next Step
