SAP SuccessFactors Connector for CData Sync

Overview

The CData Sync App provides a straightforward way to continuously pipeline your SAP SuccessFactors data to any database, data lake, or data warehouse, making it easily available for Analytics, Reporting, AI, and Machine Learning.

The SAP SuccessFactors connector can be used from the CData Sync application to pull data from SAP SuccessFactors and move it to any of the supported destinations.

SAP SuccessFactors Version Support

The driver connects to SAP SuccessFactors versions 1.0.0, and connects through the OData V2 API.

Establishing a Connection

Adding a Connection to SAP SuccessFactors

To add a connection to SAP SuccessFactors:

  1. In the application console, navigate to the Connections page.
  2. At the Add Connections panel, select the icon for the connection you want to add.
  3. If the SAP SuccessFactors icon is not available, click the Add More icon to download and install the SAP SuccessFactors connector from the CData site.

For required properties, see the Settings tab.

For connection properties that are not typically required, see the Advanced tab.

Connecting to SAPSuccessFactors

The CData Sync App communicates to SAP SuccessFactors over the OData API, which is enabled by default. If you need to provide additional permissions, please follow the steps from SAP laid out in their support site.

You can authenticate to SAP SuccessFactors using either Basic authentication or OAuth with SAML assertion.

Basic

In order to use Basic authentication, you must set a number of connection properties and you must grant access to the API.

Required Connection Properties

  • AuthScheme = BASIC.
  • Url = the url of the server hosting Success Factors. Some of the servers are listed here.
  • User = the username of your account.
  • Password = the password of your account.
  • CompanyId = your company's unique identifier.

Be aware that in Basic authentication, SAP SuccessFactors uses cookies to reuse the session after your first request to connect. This means that your credentials are only used the first time you connect to SAP SuccessFactors. After that, authentication is accomplished using cookies returned from SAP SuccessFactors.

Granting Access to the API

Once OData is enabled, you must grant access to the API to activate Basic Auth for a given user.

For an RBP System:

  1. Navigate to Administrator Permissions > Manage Integration Tools.
  2. Assign Allow Admin to Access OData API through Basic Authentication to the user.

For a User-Based System:

  1. Navigate to Administrative Privileges > Integration Tools.
  2. Assign Allow Admin to Access OData API Through Basic Authentication to the user.
  3. Navigate to the Managing Administrative Privilege page.
  4. Assign Employee Export and Employee Import to the user.

OAuth

SAP SuccessFactors supports OAuth authentication only. To enable this authentication from all OAuth flows, you must set AuthScheme to OAuth, and you must create a custom OAuth application.

The following subsections describe how to authenticate to SAP SuccessFactors from three common authentication flows:

  • Desktop: a connection to a server on the user's local machine, frequently used for testing and prototyping.
  • Web: access to data via a shared website.
  • Headless Server: a dedicated computer that provides services to other computers and their users, which is configured to operate without a monitor and keyboard.

Automatic refresh of the OAuth access token:

To have the Sync App automatically refresh the OAuth access token, do the following:

  1. Before connecting to data for the first time, set the following connection parameters:
    • InitiateOAuth = REFRESH.
    • OAuthClientId = the client Id in your application settings.
    • OAuthClientSecret = the client secret in your application settings.
    • OAuthAccessToken = the access token returned by GetOAuthAccessToken.
    • OAuthSettingsLocation = the path where you want the Sync App to save the OAuth values, which persist across connections.
  2. On subsequent data connections, set the following:
    • InitiateOAuth
    • OAuthSettingsLocation

Advanced Features

This section details a selection of advanced features of the SAP SuccessFactors Sync App.

User Defined Views

The Sync App allows you to define virtual tables, called user defined views, whose contents are decided by a pre-configured query. These views are useful when you cannot directly control queries being issued to the drivers. See User Defined Views for an overview of creating and configuring custom views.

SSL Configuration

Use SSL Configuration to adjust how Sync App handles TLS/SSL certificate negotiations. You can choose from various certificate formats; see the SSLServerCert property under "Connection String Options" for more information.

Firewall and Proxy

Configure the Sync App for compliance with Firewall and Proxy, including Windows proxies and HTTP proxies. You can also set up tunnel connections.

Query Processing

The Sync App offloads as much of the SELECT statement processing as possible to SAP SuccessFactors and then processes the rest of the query in memory (client-side).

For basic logging, you only need to set two connection properties, but there are numerous features that support more refined logging, where you can select subsets of information to be logged using the LogModules connection property.

By default, the Sync App attempts to negotiate SSL/TLS by checking the server's certificate against the system's trusted certificate store.

Connecting Through a Firewall or Proxy

HTTP Proxies

To connect through the Windows system proxy, you do not need to set any additional connection properties. To connect to other proxies, set ProxyAutoDetect to false.

In addition, to authenticate to an HTTP proxy, set ProxyAuthScheme, ProxyUser, and ProxyPassword, in addition to ProxyServer and ProxyPort.

Other Proxies

Set the following properties:

  • To use a proxy-based firewall, set FirewallType, FirewallServer, and FirewallPort.
  • To tunnel the connection, set FirewallType to TUNNEL.
  • To authenticate, specify FirewallUser and FirewallPassword.
  • To authenticate to a SOCKS proxy, additionally set FirewallType to SOCKS5.

Data Model

The CData Sync App models SAP SuccessFactors entities in relational Tables, Views, and Stored Procedures. The table definitions are dynamically obtained from the OData service you connect to. Any changes in the metadata, such as added or removed columns or changes in data type, can be loaded by reconnecting.

Tables

The Sync App models the writable entity sets and singletons described in the service metadata document as bidirectional Tables.

Views

Some OData entities can only be accessed through Navigation Properties. By default, the Sync App models navigation properties as separate views. See Views for more information on querying navigation properties.

Stored Procedures

Stored Procedures are function-like interfaces to the data source. They can be used to search, update, and modify information in the data source.

Tables

The Sync App exposes tables for every entity set and singleton defined on the OData service document. Entities on these tables may be inserted, updated, or deleted using standard SQL insert, update, or delete statements.

Executing Deep Inserts with SQL

The Sync App supports OData deep inserts, in which you simultaneously create a base entity and link it to related entities, by specifying navigation properties. To specify Navigation Properties for an entity, you create a temporary table for the navigation property and then reference the temporary table in the insert to the base table. Reference the temporary table in the appropriate navigation property column on the base table. Each navigation property column is prefixed with the word "Linked".

Note that you must define the temporary tables and insert to the base entity within the same connection.

Example: Deep Inserts in SAP SuccessFactors

For example, consider the ExternalUser table. When creating an ExternalUser, you may also specify an ExtAddressInfo, ExtEmailInfo, ExtPersonalInfo, and ExtPhoneInfo. To do so, you can specify the following navigation properties.

Creating Temporary Tables

Insert the related entities into temporary tables that correspond to each navigation property. You can specify an existing entity's primary key or you can insert a new entity.

  • ExtAddressInfo: The following statement creates a new ExtAddressInfo:

The CData Sync App will assume that the ExtPhoneInfo and ExtPersonalInfo already exist and will only link to the existing references since only the primary keys were specified for either. When more than just the primary key is defined, such as the examples for ExtAddressInfo and ExtEmailInfo, the CData Sync App will attempt to create new entries - triggering the deep insert.

Inserting the Entity

In the INSERT statement for the base entity, reference the temporary tables in the LinkedExtAddressInfo, LinkedExtEmailInfo, LinkedExtPersonalInfo, and LinkedExtPhoneInfo columns:

Views

Modeling Navigation Properties

By default, the Sync App models Navigation Properties as separate views. The views are named in the format ParentTable_NavigationProperty.

Querying Navigation Properties

For an example of working with a navigation property as a view, the JobApplication entity has a lot of navigation properties. We will look at the "education" navigation property. The CData Sync App will display a view called JobApplication_education. Retrieving data from JobApplication_education will display the JobApplicationSnapshot_Education object associated with a given JobApplication. The JobApplication_education view has a primary key made up of the Id of the parent entity and the Id of the related entity.

Navigation Properties

In OData, a navigation property is a property on an entity that is itself either a single entity or list of entities.

A single-entity navigation property signifies a one-to-one relationship. For example, SAP SuccessFactors has the entity JobApplication which contains an Eduction navigation property, which references a single JobApplicationSnapshot_Education entity.

An entity set navigation property signifies a one-to-many relationship. For example, in SAP SuccessFactors, the JobApplication has a Langauges navigation property which can reference many JobApplicationSnapshot_Languages objects.

Working with Navigation Properties Relationally

Navigation properties in OData link related entities. Similarly, in a relational database, a foreign key serves to link tables. For example, the JobApplicationSnapshot_Language record contains the applicationId column, which uniquely identifies what JobApplication the JobApplicationSnapshot_Language belongs to.

Select

It can be used to retrieve related entites that do not exist by themselves such as the emailTypeNav on PerEmail. See Views for more information on querying navigation properties.

Insert

The Sync App supports OData deep inserts. See Tables for more information on specifying navigation properties when you create an entity.

Remarks

This property specifies the protocol that the Sync App will use to tunnel traffic through the FirewallServer proxy. Note that by default, the Sync App connects to the system proxy; to disable this behavior and connect to one of the following proxy types, set ProxyAutoDetect to false.

Note that the Sync App uses the system proxy by default. To use a different proxy, set ProxyAutoDetect to false.

This value specifies the authentication type to use to authenticate to the HTTP proxy specified by ProxyServer and ProxyPort.

Note that the Sync App will use the system proxy settings by default, without further configuration needed; if you want to connect to another proxy, you will need to set ProxyAutoDetect to false, in addition to ProxyServer and ProxyPort. To authenticate, set ProxyAuthScheme and set ProxyUser and ProxyPassword, if needed.

The authentication type can be one of the following:

  • BASIC: The Sync App performs HTTP BASIC authentication.
  • DIGEST: The Sync App performs HTTP DIGEST authentication.
  • NEGOTIATE: The Sync App retrieves an NTLM or Kerberos token based on the applicable protocol for authentication.
  • PROPRIETARY: The Sync App does not generate an NTLM or Kerberos token. You must supply this token in the Authorization header of the HTTP request.

The ProxyUser and ProxyPassword options are used to connect and authenticate against the HTTP proxy specified in ProxyServer.

You can select one of the available authentication types in ProxyAuthScheme. If you are using HTTP authentication, set this to the user name of a user recognized by the HTTP proxy. If you are using Windows or Kerberos authentication, set this property to a user name in one of the following formats:

Remarks

This property is used to authenticate to an HTTP proxy server that supports NTLM (Windows), Kerberos, or HTTP authentication. To specify the HTTP proxy, you can set ProxyServer and ProxyPort. To specify the authentication type, set ProxyAuthScheme.

If you are using HTTP authentication, additionally set ProxyUser and ProxyPassword to HTTP proxy.

If you are using NTLM authentication, set ProxyUser and ProxyPassword to your Windows password. You may also need these to complete Kerberos authentication.

The SSL type to use when connecting to the ProxyServer proxy.

This property determines when to use SSL for the connection to an HTTP proxy specified by ProxyServer. This value can be AUTO, ALWAYS, NEVER, or TUNNEL. The applicable values are the following:

AUTODefault setting. If the URL is an HTTPS URL, the Sync App will use the TUNNEL option. If the URL is an HTTP URL, the component will use the NEVER option.
ALWAYSThe connection is always SSL enabled.
NEVERThe connection is not SSL enabled.
TUNNELThe connection is through a tunneling proxy. The proxy server opens a connection to the remote host and traffic flows back and forth through the proxy.

The folder location can be a relative path from the location of the executable. The Location property is only needed if you want to customize definitions (for example, change a column name, ignore a column, and so on) or extend the data model with new tables, views, or stored procedures.

This property indicates whether or not to include pseudo columns as columns to the table.

Remarks

This setting is particularly helpful in Entity Framework, which does not allow you to set a value for a pseudo column unless it is a table column. The value of this connection setting is of the format "Table1=Column1, Table1=Column2, Table2=Column3". You can use the "*" character to include all tables and all columns; for example, "*=*".

PurgeType

PurgeType is an optional parameter that determines whether an incremental or full update will be performed on an entity.

Remarks

Value Description
incremental(default) The upsert operation purges and replaces only the data specified in the request payload. The default upsert behavior is incremental purge unless you specify PurgeType=full.
full The upsert operation purges all existing data of the entry and creates new data specified in the request payload. If there are multiple time slices for the given record, the upsert operation with PurgeType=full deletes all the time slices and creates new ones specified in the request. If you want to keep a particular time slice, make sure to include all of its data in the request payload. If some time slices are missing, then import engine will delete them.
record Same behavior as incremental purge. This type of incremental purge is available only for MDF entities and the User entity.

Mandatory Field Governance During Upsert Since a full purge erases all existing data of an entry and creates new data, it follows the mandatory fields governance of the entity. Whether an entry exists or not in the database, you must provide all required fields in your OData Operations payload to be able to sucessfully upsert the entry.

The value in seconds until the timeout error is thrown, canceling the operation.

Remarks

If Timeout = 0, operations do not time out. The operations run until they complete successfully or until they encounter an error condition.

Whether or not the CData ADO.NET Provider for SAP SuccessFactors should use client side paging.

Remarks

Some sources do not support server side paging. In these cases, set UseClientSidePaging to true. Otherwise, leave it as false. Setting UseClientSidePaging to true on a source that already supports paging can cause incomplete results.

UsePicklistDisplayNames

Boolean determining whether or not to use SAP labels for picklist options.

Remarks

If set to true, the labels that have been configured for the picklist options, will be pushed in a separate column. The column will have the name of the picklist field followed by _label. To achieve this, the Sync App will retrieve and store a list of all picklist options and their labels, which could be costly depending on the number of picklist options the SAP SuccessFactors has.

UserDefinedViews

A filepath pointing to the JSON configuration file containing your custom views.

Remarks

User Defined Views are defined in a JSON-formatted configuration file called UserDefinedViews.json. The Sync App automatically detects the views specified in this file.

You can also have multiple view definitions and control them using the UserDefinedViews connection property. When you use this property, only the specified views are seen by the Sync App.

This User Defined View configuration file is formatted as follows:

  • Each root element defines the name of a view.
  • Each root element contains a child element, called query, which contains the custom SQL query for the view.

For example:
