Establishing a Connection

Configure a Connection Profile

From the CData ribbon, click Get Data and select From Shopify connection/s to launch the CData Query window. To setup a new connection, you will have to click the New Shopify Connection button. Here you can set the connection settings, test the connection, and save the connection profile.

Connecting to Shopify

This section describes how to connect to Shopify from the web, a desktop application, or a headless application.

Access Token Authentication

Connecting via an access token takes two steps:

  1. Use the Shopify admin page to create the access token
  2. Use your access token to authenticate

Create the Access Token

Follow the steps below to register an application and obtain the access token (Note: Legacy custom apps cannot be created after January 1, 2026):

  1. Log in to your Shopify from the admin page and navigate to Apps > Apps and sales channels.
  2. Click Develop apps and select Create an app.
  3. In the Overview tab, under Configuration, click Admin API integration and select the access permissions for your store that you want to grant to your application. The Admin API permissions required by our provider are:

  4. Click Save.
  5. In the Overview tab, under Configuration, click Storefront API integration and select the access permissions for your store that you want to grant to your application. The Storefront API permission required by our provider is:
    • unauthenticated_read_content
  6. Click Save.
  7. Select API Credentials.
  8. Under "Access tokens" click Install app. This creates your access token.
  9. Copy your access token under Admin API Access token. NOTE: The token can be revealed and copied only once.

Authenticate via Access Token

To authenticate using an access token, specify the following:

  • AuthScheme: Set to AccessToken.
  • AccessToken: Set to the access token value you copied from the custom app.

OAuth Authentication

Shopify supports OAuth authentication. In all cases, AuthScheme must be set to OAuth, and you must create a custom OAuth application. See Creating a Custom OAuth Application for for more information.

Desktop Applications

Follow the steps below to authenticate with the credentials for a custom OAuth application.

Get and Refresh the OAuth Access Token

After setting the following, you are ready to connect:

  • OAuthClientId: Set this to the client Id assigned when you registered your application.
  • OAuthClientSecret: Set this to the client secret assigned when you registered your application.
  • CallbackURL: Set this to the redirect URI defined when you registered your application.
When you connect, the add-in opens Shopify's OAuth endpoint in your default browser. Log in and grant permissions to the application. The add-in refreshes the access token automatically when it expires.

OAuth Client Authentication

Shopify supports OAuth authentication using the Client Credentials grant flow. You must create a custom OAuth application, define the required scopes, and install the application on the store where you want to retrieve data. See Creating a Custom OAuth Application for more information.

Note: The Client Credentials flow is available only for apps developed by your own organization and installed on stores that you own.

To connect, set the following properties:

  • AuthScheme: Set to OAuthClient to perform authentication using the Client Credentials grant type.
  • OAuthClientId: Set this to the client Id assigned when you registered your application.
  • OAuthClientSecret: Set this to the client secret assigned when you registered your application.

Connection Properties

The Connection properties describe the various options that can be used to establish a connection.

Managing Connections

After successfully authenticating to Shopify you will be able to customize the data you are importing. To learn more about this, see Managing Connections.
