Querying with the DataReader
The CData ADO.NET Provider for Microsoft Dynamics NAV implements two ADO.NET interfaces you can use to retrieve data from Microsoft Dynamics NAV: DynamicsNAVDataAdapter and DynamicsNAVDataReader objects. Whereas DynamicsNAVDataAdapter objects retrieve a single result set of all the data that matches a query, DynamicsNAVDataReader objects fetch data in subset increments as needed.
Using the DynamicsNAVDataReader
The DynamicsNAVDataReader retrieves data faster than the DynamicsNAVDataAdapter because it can retrieve data in pages. As you read data from the DynamicsNAVDataReader, it periodically requests the next page of results from the data source, if required. This causes results to be returned at a faster rate. The following example selects all the columns from the Customer table:
C#
string connectionString = "URL=http://myserver:7048;User=myserver\Administrator;Password=admin;ServerInstance=DYNAMICSNAV71;"; using (DynamicsNAVConnection connection = new DynamicsNAVConnection(connectionString)) { DynamicsNAVCommand cmd = new DynamicsNAVCommand("SELECT * FROM Customer", connection); DynamicsNAVDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); while (rdr.Read()) { Console.WriteLine(String.Format("\t{0} --> \t\t{1}", rdr["No"], rdr["Contact"])); } }
VB.NET
Dim connectionString As String = "URL=http://myserver:7048;User=myserver\Administrator;Password=admin;ServerInstance=DYNAMICSNAV71;" Using connection As New DynamicsNAVConnection(connectionString) Dim cmd As New DynamicsNAVCommand("SELECT * FROM Customer", connection) Dim rdr As DynamicsNAVDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader() While rdr.Read() Console.WriteLine([String].Format(vbTab & "{0} --> " & vbTab & vbTab & "{1}", rdr("No"), rdr("Contact"))) End While End Using
