Creating a Custom OAuth Application

Creating a Custom OAuth Application

If you do not have access to the username and API token, or do not wish to require them, you can use OAuth authentication. Jira uses the OAuth authentication standard, which requires the authenticating user to interact with Jira via the browser. The connector facilitates the OAuth exchange in various ways, as described in this section.

CData embeds OAuth application credentials with CData branding that can be used when connecting via a desktop application or headless application. You may choose to use your own OAuth application credentials when you want to:

  • Control branding of the Authentication Dialog.
  • Control the redirect URI that the application redirects the user to after the user authenticates.
  • Customize the permissions that you are requesting from the user.

Jira Cloud

To create a custom OAuth 2.0 application on your Jira Cloud instance, follow the instructions below:

  1. Log in to your Jira Cloud site.
  2. Navigate to the application management page at (not your OAuth credentials at yoursitename.atlassian.net/secure/admin/oauth-credentials, which is for self-hosted tools.)
  3. Click Create > OAuth 2.0 integration.
  4. In the Name field, supply a name for the application.
  5. In the Access type section, select Resource-level to grant access to the site the user selects during authorization, or select Account-level to grant access to all resources within the authenticating user's account, regardless of which resource the user selects during authorization.
  6. Click Create. The overview page for the new app opens.
  7. To add OAuth 2.0 functionality to your application, navigate to Authorization, then select Add for the OAuth 2.0 (3LO) authorization type.
  8. Under Callback URLs, enter one or more URLs reachable from your application and select Save changes.
  9. Navigate to Permissions, find the entry for Jira API, and click Add to grant access to the Jira API. The "Add" button is replaced with a "Configure" button.
  10. Select Configure on the Jira API.
  11. For each section in the Classic scopes tab (Jira platform and Jira Service Management APIs) and the Granular Scopes tab, click Edit Scopes, select all of the scopes you want to grant your application, then click Save.

Jira Data Center

To obtain the OAuth client credentials, including the Client ID and Client Secret, for your Jira Data Center instance:

  1. Log in to your Jira Data Center site.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Applications > Application Links.
  3. Click Create Link.
  4. Select External Application, and then choose Incoming as the direction.
  5. Fill in the Application Name and Redirect URL fields (e.g., http://localhost:33333).
  6. Set the Permissions. Recommended permissions: READ, WRITE, ADMIN.
  7. Save the created app.
